Exam Fever

It is the time of the year again when most students will catch a virus that will cause the exam fever which if not treated with care will have disastrous results. Thus, to all those students whom I have taught before, do take good care of your health and build up your defence against the exam fever. And to do that, you need plently of rest and sleep so do stop burning that midnight oil. Most of the time, it does more harm than good. Do spend some time (max. 3 hours but not at a stretch) revising your work during the day and have an early rest at night. Your brain will need its precious rest so as to achieve its optimium performance during the exam in the day, so if it is deprive of its rest, how can it do its best for you? Just like an athlete who practises hard during the day, he needs to have sufficient rest during the night so as to be able to break record after record. It might be difficult for some of you to revise your work during the day, so you will have to find a convenient time in the evening for some quick revision but you must still have enough rest. Actually, it is not how much time you spend at your study table but how much you actually learn during that period. It is the quality that counts not quantity. You can be spending 4, 5 hours revising but still do not learn as much as one who spends half an hour on the same revision. Just like it takes time for the food we eat to be digested by our stomach, our brain needs time to digest what we have learnt. Imagine trying to swallow your food without chewing and pushing as much food as you can into your mouth, what will be the outcome? Your stomach will throw everything out including those you have eaten earlier. Similarly, when you try to cramp all that you have learnt into your brain in a span of hours (when it normally takes months or even years), your brain will reject whatever you are trying to memorise or worse still erase those you already learnt. It is useless to press the panic button at this point of time, what you can do now is to be choosy and revise the more important topics or chapters, beginnig with the first paper and working gradually from there to the final paper. You have to be selective now as your brain simply cannot handle the sudden influx of information. Overloading it will cause more damage which in some cases can be permanent. I know it is easier said than done as I am not the one taking the exam but I have taken exams before and I understand the kind of pressure you are going through. Just like me, you will be trying to make use of every minute, every second to memorise as much as you can and hope to remember everything during the exam. Trust me, it doesn't work that way most of the time (unless you are very lucky). Thus, instead of trying to get everything into your poor brain, learn and UNDERSTAND those MORE important topics and you should be quite safe unless you have been sleeping in class all this while.
Remember, the key to success is to relax and think clearly rather than to panic and get confused. All the best to those taking the PSLE and the GCE 'N' Level this week and those taking the GCE 'O' Level next month and not forgetting all others who are taking the End-of-Year exams. May you stay calm and pass all your papers with flying colours. Stay healthy and cheerful and you shall succeed.
